Foto Na Dans Interview

Posted by: musicalmover on: July 4, 2009

Foto Na Dans

Foto Na Dans is a band breaking the boundaries of Afrikaans music with their signature style that is “indie rock with a hint of electronic sounds”.

The band were all in school together at DF Malan in Bellville and all the band except LeRoi were in a band called Trompie is Dood at an early age–winning the Jip! Rockspaaider competition, but “that was 5 years ago. That was a different band from Foto Na Dans.”

Their name Foto Na Dans is “a neutral term, one that can be bound to music and visual elements “Dans” points to the music, and “Foto” to the visual aspects of the media….”

Their opinion of the music the music industry has also changed since their Rockspaaider days and Alex says “The whole industry has changed a lot. There is a lot more structure & support. There are more bands and there is more happening. It’s exciting.”

Foto Na Dans

Their most heavy influences musically “are endless…Air, Radiohead, Muse, Mew, Hot Chip, Sigur Ros…everyone has many of their own influences…so between us the list is probably 100 artists long.”

Their first self titled EP had a very raw sound to it compared to the ‘futuristic’ heavenly sound on their latest album (Pantomime op Herwinbare Klanke). Alex says “with our first EP we had no clue what we were doing. We just went into studio and laid down raw tracks as we rehearsed them in the band room…On our later recordings we had more of a clue and started experimenting with electronic sounds.”

Foto Na Dans live

The band is “currently busy working on a new album and they have “about 8 songs written already and it is sounding really hot. With all the previous albums we had deadlines to keep as to when the album had to be finished. We are trying a different approach this time by letting the music and the songs determine the deadlines instead of other way around..”

Their planning to work on their new album then head overseas in July. They have collaboration with Flash Republic is on the cards, “which should be quite cool and the tunes are sounding kiff…so maybe people will be dancing to our songs in clubs…that’ll be awesome.”

The band has “dreams of making it internationally” and say “our short term goal is to make our new album our best ever and believe “the potential is there as the songs are sounding better than ever…also there has been quite a bit of international interest in the band and a few people are watching our new album to see what it does…and then we’ll just have to see from there…”

Foto Na Dans

Their favourite thing about performing is “the energy. And being able to see that you manage to move people’s emotions with your songs…that’s a beautiful thing.”

The latest album is very innovative and has recieved praise by the media for this. The change in sound over all three albums shows their progression as a band; Alex says “the sound on the new album will be less experimental than our previous EP. Our song writing style has also changed and most of the songs are based around the vocal melodies. The songs are big…epic even…”

Le Roi takes about an hour to get ready before a gig and he was born with his afro. Dirkie is known to always talk rubbish. always. Alex lets loose on tour and is the messiest of the lot. The craziest things that happen at shows are the hidious wipeouts as Theuns is renowned for getting his ass bruised, but as for working on side projects-musically all of them pretty committed to Foto Na Dans…

Michael Jackson: the man, the life, the legend.

Posted by: musicalmover on: June 26, 2009

Michael Jackson’s death has struck the world and the world of music hard. His often tumultuous and unconventional personal life has made media headlines the world over, numerous times.

His career has certainly had its highs and lows, from being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to facing child molestation charges. Michael Jackson caused a media frenzy at every turn.

His music career was underway at an early age with the group that was started by his father and included his brothers called The Jackson 5. They went on release songs such as ‘ABC’, ‘The Love You Save’ and many others which were all chart toppers.

Michael then went on to have a highly successful solo career with highlights that included releasing ‘Thriller’-the album that went on to become the biggest-selling album of all time, staying in the charts for 2 years and hitting number one worldwide. The music video for Thriller being dubbed as “the greatest video of all time”.

In 1987 the world tour supporting the album ‘Bad’ became the highest-grossing tour of all time. At the same time more media speculation about his personal life lead the tabloids start to call him ‘Wacko Jacko’.

His career was one that was blighted by his highly unusual personal life as it was his personal life that often overshadowed his music, like his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley and the purchase of Neverland, an amusement park filled with rides and animals that he called home. He also underwent extensive cosmetic surgery and was accused of wanting to ‘turn white’ as his skin got lighter. Wild rumours about Jackson’s personal life start to surface and caused what was now left of his music career to fade into the background.

In 2005 he faced charges of child molestation and was acquitted on all counts. Although acquitted, the trial caused even more havoc in his already turbulent personal life.

His musical career was adversely affected by his tarnished image  and many of his later musical offerings were never as successful as many hoped. We will never truly know what happened during the last stage of his life but we can only choose to respect the musical legend and inspiration that he was.

The Gossip

Posted by: musicalmover on: June 21, 2009

I’ve just found this band called The Gossip, they are amazing and are set to be one of the next big things-so watch out!

their bio reads:

The genre-bending DIY post-punk rock trio Gossip bring a new level of lyrical power and musical sophistication to their ever-evolving, always-electrifying sound and sensibility on Music For Men, the indie group’s first major label studio album.

While the Gossip incorporate a deft sense of cultural irony into Music For Men, there’s nothing confusing about the post-punk trio’s musical approach: direct and visceral, pulsing with a raw and unapologetic animal energy, drummer Hannah Blilie’s propulsive rhythms interlocking with Brace’s heart-pounding riffs and Beth’s aggressive and cathartic vocals.

On-board to make sure the Gossip got the studio sound they were looking for was producer Rick Rubin, who the helped the band find its own distinct groove in every track. “He is a true mystic,” Brace observes “All we talked about was John Cage. He’s only cares about music, speakers and sound systems. He’s really amazing to work with. I’d say ‘make the bass sound like PiL’ and he’d know what I was talking about, he got all the references. He would let me do whatever I wanted to do. Such awesome energy.”

Brace admits that the band’s experience cutting Music For Men at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu marked “the first time we ever had access to a studio like that. I can see if you let a musician loose in this big studio to just ride all this stuff, I can see why somebody would just come up with this huge thing. Having restraint was so important. I hate the over-production sound.”

Brace and Beth have been friends since Brace was 15 and each of them was formulating a cosmopolitan world-view encompassing far more than their lives in small farming towns on the outskirts of Searcy, Arkansas. A punk mixtape made its way from Brace to Beth (via a mutual friend, Kathy Mendonca, who’d later become the first drummer for the Gossip) and the seeds of a long-standing friendship and musical union were planted.

Right from the beginning, the Gossip felt they were on to something special. “Beth was doing this bluesy thing,” Brace remembers. “It was more lo-fi. We never did sound checks. Everything was super-loud and distorted. I didn’t know how to play my guitar at all. Then we got this new drummer….”

Once drummer Hannah Blilie came on-board, the Gossip line-up was in-place, ready to shake some action and kick down some walls. The young indie trio broke-through with 2006’s Standing In The Way Of Control, which reached #1 on the UK indie chart and #22 on the UK album chart while the title track became widely associated with the popular UK teen drama, “Skins.”

And though the daily lives of the band’s members remain unaffected by the Gossip’s growing notoriety, the heat of their music and the adrenaline-rush of their live shows are an ongoing source of excitement.

Since the group’s formation, the Gossip has opened for and/or toured with a wide variety of musicians including Le Tigre, Chromatics, Tracy and the Plastics, Sonic Youth, Pre, YYY, Sleetmute Nightmute, Glass Candy, the White Stripes, CSS, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Erase Errata, Stereo Total, and the Kills among others.

The summer of 2007 found the Gossip on-board the True Colors Tour — as part of an eclectic bill including Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Erasure, Rufus Wainwright, the Dresden Dolls, the MisShapes, the Cliks and host Margaret Cho — for a series of concerts benefitting the Human Rights Campaign.

With “Music For Men,” the Gossip bring together the vital elements of danger, thrills and passion to their sound and vision, partying like it’s 2012!!!

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review

Posted by: musicalmover on: June 20, 2009

nokia-5800-xpressmusic

“With the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we set out to connect people through the one thing we all feel a universal connection to – music,” said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia. “The way in which people enjoy music is different around the world. With that in mind, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gives people the freedom to experience music they love in the way they prefer” and that they did.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the perfect mix of form and functionality, using the latest mobile Symbian technology the Nokia XpressMusic mixes both business and pleasure. The retail price at about R5100 and upwards making it a high end phone and somewhat unaffordable to it’s presumed target market.

It is a serious contender as a rival to the iPhone as both share some of the same features such as touch screen functionality and the ability to view the phone both normally and horizontally allowing for easier access when typing.

The phone is lightweight although durable and sturdy, with a stylus, plectrum and finger touch support for text and other input you are spoilt for choice as what to use. Making it even easier there is also an alphanumeric keypad, a full and mini qwerty keyboard and handwriting recognition which allows for text input in any way you choose.

Other handy features are that of the Media Bar, it’s one touch, easy key access to the music, gallery, share on-line, Video Centre and web browser all that are available on the phone.the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer “the industry’s most powerful sound”.

The phone supports all main digital music formats and with a 3.2 mexapixel camera great quality photos are never more than a click away; with recording capabilities of up to an hour and video capabilities of up to an hour and a half you can ensure you capture any moment. The phone also supports the Nokia Music store and once you access it, it makes downloads from the store simple and easy and with Maps and location technology you’ll always know where you are far afield as you may go.

There was only one fault I could find with the phone, one being the length of the headphone cord (it was too short to be practical) .

Overall the phone isn’t just all about the music with all round great features the phone is a must have for music lovers and professionals alike.

Captain Stu-More Than Friends Release

Posted by: musicalmover on: June 11, 2009

Press Release: More Than Friends

Cape Town based ska / reggae band Captain Stu have released the second single of their second album (The Adventures of Captain Stu), namely More Than Friends, to radio stations nationwide for play listing on Friday, 5 July 2009.

“They stay true to their signature energetic and diverse sound  in which they combine different genres of music such as rock, ska, reggae and funk which causes for instant foot-tapping and sing-along.”

“I know we’re not lovers, I know we’re more than friends / I didn’t mean to say I need you, let me stay tonight / I know it’s not perfect, it’s the best we’re gonna get.”

“Don’t say that you love me, cos when you say it it’s a lie.”

Clement Carr, Captain Stu’s (original) ex-saxophonist came to practice one day with a song he’d been working on for piano. As usually happens with Captain Stu creations, the band quickly began to work on it together, eventually coming out with the song as it stands now, although much, if not most, of the original work and ideas should be credited to Carr. Once that was done, Nick Key (lead singer) wrote most of the lyrics and vocal melodies and James Klopper (guitarist) wrote a short part of the lyrics which can be heard near the end of the song.

“The song seems to be about the connections between people, acquaintances, friends, lovers, etc. It’s about finding that time and space where you’re happy and content with the people or person in your life, and then going with it, following the flow for all it’s worth, and enjoying and enduring the ups and the downs together. I suppose it’s also about expressing yourself in any situation in the best way possible, which for us turned out to be a slick little melody with no lyrics whatsoever.”

Besides the usual ‘anyone who enjoys happy, creative and energetic music’, we’d like to think that anybody who has any kind of connection with anyone else could identify with this song. While we realise this includes every living human on this planet, we can’t help but believe that our music has a universal appeal, and we’re going to keep writing and recording more music until we prove this, or until our fingers fall off and our tongues fall out.” James Klopper, Captain Stu guitarist.

Can’t wait to hear the and see the new song! In the meantime you can download the album here from Rhythm Records..
