IAMWAVES vs Popskarr.

Popskarr

IAMWAVES vs Popskarr.

Yannick Ilunga started IAMWAVES as he “couldn’t stand listening to music and not liking certain parts…”  he says “I try to make music. Not pop, not Hip Hop, not House, Not electro or any other genre of music. I just want to make music straight from the heart.”

In early 2009 he met Spoek Mathambo, Spoek saw the potential he had and “helped him artistically as well as by introducing him to his musical partner and friend Terrence (Dj Lapse)”. Yannick and Terrence spoke for a while and then started the group Popskarr, an electronic powerhouse from the shores of Cape Town.

Yannick describes Popskarr’s sound as “kinda weird. You can kinda here all the influences in it. It’s kinda poppy but deep but dancy, but nu wavey, but still kinda bangs you sound system. if you know what I mean.”

Popskarr. Watch out for these guys. Oh and for some amazingness, you can download their first single Tonight here.

IAMWAVES

Posted by: musicalmover on: November 4, 2009

IAMWAVES

Yannick Ilunga a.k.a IAMWAVES was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1990. He was the last born to an Angolan mother and Congolese dad. Yannick and the rest of his family would often move from country to country due to his dad’s job at the time.

They then emigrated to South Africa where Yannick started school and finished his primary and secondary education.

Yannick recalls that he “liked music from a very young age.” He continues “I would sing the lyrics to most pop songs on TV from the age of 5 or 6 and learn all the dance moves.” He then found “a love for music and started experimenting with Hip Hop”.

Yannick’s main influences are God, he says “it may be clichéd but its true”, Kid Cudi, Mew, Phoenix, Spoek, his friends, his family and life in general also inspire him. He “feeds himself with positivity and tries to stay away from negative light and bad energy.”

In 2005 he started playing guitar and that’s when his love for music started to “become all that he wanted to do.” At a later stage he moved on to playing drums “to try and understand this genius thing called music.” It came in the way of his skateboarding which he “loved very much.” In early 2008 he then joined a band Called Fallen Within which grew apart in early 2009.

After the break Yannick had to keep the musical flame inside of him and that’s when he started IAMWAVES. He couldn’t stand listening to music and not liking certain parts so he therefore started making his own music. ” I try to make music. Not pop, not Hip Hop, not House, Not electro or any other genre of music. I just want to make music straight from the heart.” Yannick believes that “God gave me this talent, without God I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Subsequently Yannick made “a little demo CD using a computer mic and basic loops.” He then met Ryan Dalton “who helped him grow as a musician and help him record one of his favorite songs ever”-a song he “still enjoys listening to today”.

They made their first appearance on the Earthdance stage which was “a big shocker” for Yannick at first but then they ended up “wowing the crowd”…

Watch out for him, Yannick looks to be the next big thing.

Assembly

Assembly have a reputation for premier live entertainment and it seems November is such a month to showcase that.

With shows featuring the likes of aKING,  chart toppers and media darlings, as well as Jack Parow, the biggest thing to happen to Afrikaans and Thieve-charisma made audible, playing a highly anticipated show on the 5th of November.

Then if that wasn’t enough, Goldfish (made up of Dominic Peters and David Poole), one of the hottest jazz/electro duos this side of the equator hailing from Cape Town South Africa will be heating up the dancefloor at Discotheque on the 6th. It’s sure to be a party-with a capital P.

With a sound that has been compared to Prime Circle and Watershed but is still uniquely their own, MerseyState is the culmination of alternative rock at its best. They’re set to rock at Assembly on November 7th.

These are not-to-be-missed shows.  Get your tickets here.

Owl City

Posted by: musicalmover on: November 3, 2009

Owl City

Hello, my name is Adam.
I prefer daydreams over reality.
Music is my muse.

I write and record in my basement.
I have trouble sleeping.
These songs are all I have to show for my sleepless nights.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.
It means the world to know someone is out there listening.
You have no idea how much I appreciate you.
Thank you.

Adam.

When I read that Fireflies’ will be “the most gorgeous tune you’re going to hear this week” I had to hear what all the fuss was about.

Serene, magical and sublime are just a few of the many adjectives that come to mind when describing Owl City (Adam Young). “shimmering pop gems” have also been thrown in.

It’s Electronica/Pop at its best and being number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America seems to prove just that…

Fireflies’ the most gorgeous tune you’re going to hear this week. How true.

Enjoy the video below.

New Holland-live at Assembly 21 Nov

Posted by: musicalmover on: November 3, 2009

New Holland band

New Holland`s long awaited second album “Exploded Views” was released on 21 September 2009. “Exploded Views” is a “strong characteristic album immediately accessible to various genre preferences, with each song showcasing unique soudscapes and captivating arrangements.”

Their live shows have been called “energetic, vibrant and super sleek”. As for the line-up, it looks to be explosive (excuse the pun) New Holland, the Pinkertons, DJ Haasbroek as well as my favourite DJ’s Codec vs The Sound will be playing.

Assembly. The 21st of November. It starts at 21:00 and  R40 gets you in.

It’s too good to be missed.

Jack Parow the “original donker dodgy afrikaans rapper.”

Posted by: musicalmover on: November 2, 2009

Jack Parow truly is original, he is in fact theoriginal donker dodgy afrikaans rapper”. The rest are just “fokken copies.”

He never really thought about a stage name as such, the name Jack Parow came about as he was “drunk, and then Pirates of the Caribbean was on tv and I tuned, fuck Jack Sparrow the pirate of the Caribbean, I’m Jack Parow the pirate of the caravan park…luckily I remembered it the next morning!”

Afrikaans and South African rap are not one of the most listened to genres, with Brasse van die Kaap, Dokte, Waddy Jones and Jitsvinger being the leaders in the industry. Jack’s inspiration as such is “Eminem. He is always king. He is one of my favourite rappers, but I was rapping before he came out, so I’m not like some white kid trying to be Eminem. Waddy [Jones] is a good chommie of mine and we roll the streets together, but I’m straight Afrikaans, they are more English and thus have a different approach to the market, but other artists don’t inspire me, I get inspired by drunk people mostly, the best lines come out of drunken peoples mouths, I also get drunk before I write sometimes, it’s kief. People that also inspire me are zef people, like myself and most of my friends…”

He’s loved rap “since [he] first started listening to music” he continues “you know when you’re younger you buy those NOW and Monster Hits cds and I always smaaked like Dr. Alban and Shaggy and those vibes and then I bought Monster Hits 5 or something, it was like a kief purple one with this heavy green monster on it and there was a track called Doggystyle by a gevaarlike man called Snoop and I was instantly hooked on rap. I was like 11 or 12…ja, that was it, but I never really wanted to be a rapper, I just liked rapping, I studied and still do web design and graphic design, but rap is obviously always been the main thing, I never thought I would be able to do it for a living….”

He started rapping in 2000 “but was just having fun and fucking around, trying to freestyle and stuff” Then he rapped in English for “a long time, till about 2004” it all changed when he “wrote this track in Afrikaans where I was being robbed by a bergie and I was like tuning him kak and so, and it came out so cool that I was like, fokkit, why haven’t I been rapping in Afrikaans all along?”

He is heavily influenced by “drunk people. I love drunken conversations, they are the fokkin best thing ever-also people who are like heavy into cars or systems, they have the best one-liners.”

He started making music “because its fun and I like it when people around me are enjoying themselves, so ja, it’s a lekker way to gooi it.”

When he creates songs he “usually just writes it in my head and then just kinda beatboxes or hums it into my phone and then go to the studio and try my best to recreate it like it is in my brain.”

The new things happening are “work on some secret projects that are gonna be ill as fok and no other rappers are doing, but it’s a secret so you gonna have to wait and see…will probably launch that vibe next year sometime, it’s gonna be kak fancy…”

When he starts doing solo gigs full time-the shows will be “gevaarlik, I’ve just been hitting the laptop vibe for now, but when the album launches it’s gonna be a whole other fokken thing all together. I’m not going to let too much information out…”

He “would like to be next level with boats and brandy sponsors and kief cars and just sit on a throne with a crown and a scepter and a ruby covered chalice and drink brandy and coke all day.”

His favourite thing about performing is “when people are really listening and then I drop something dirty or funny and everyone bugs the fuck out.”

Recording the album was “great fun, its so lekker fucking around in the studio and coming up with new stuff!” His favourite track is Cooler as Ekke.

Cooler as Ekke happens to the single he’s just released. He explains “it’s a track about everyone who think they are so cool, you know the vibe, those guys and girls who look like they stepped right out of one of those Hip magazines and are always like standing in the corner and watching everyone cause if they move to much or maybe dance and something happens, like they slip or maybe dance to the wrong track, they might not be cool anymore.”

As the Afrikaans Super Ster Rapper Jack Parow “hopes to change the fact that everyone is so clicky, I hate that, I party with everyone and everyone is fun in their own way, and people are to heavy involved in their own little circles and never step outside it, That’s why I’m glad my music attracts so many different people, because then they can all get drunk together and gooi die jol rof. I also want like world peace and to feed all the hungry children and stuff…”

If he could have a beer with one Afrikaans Skouspel backtrack pop artists it would be “Robbie Wessels, I just fokkin love his music…dont know what I’d say to him, maybe like, please do a track with me!”

His favourite T.V show is “Oor die Kole on KykNet and Okney Snorkney reruns”. His cd player currently has “Major Lazer – Guns don’t kill people, Lazers do” on rotation. “It’s the fokkin best shit ever.” He would most like to be on the reality show “Boer soek n vrou” His favourite of the many great Afrikaans swear words, starts with a P and ends with an S. Fill in the blanks.

Jack Parow is never one to shy from controversy but also just wants things “like world peace and to feed all the hungry children and stuff” as well as simple things in life like, “boats and brandy sponsors and kief cars and a scepter and a ruby covered chalice and just sit on a throne with a crown …”

Robbie Williams- “Bodies”

Posted by: musicalmover on: November 1, 2009

My oh my, what are on earth was Robbie Williams on whilst writing Bodies? Who knows, but clearly whatever it was had an effect, causing him to delve into questioning Jesus, looking good naked and bodies…

Fraser McAlpine summed up some of the (many) lyrical parodies brilliantly:

“If Jesus really died for me, then Jesus really tried for me”
- Hear that, heavenly host? That’s the sound of one man clapping…ish.

“All we’ve ever wanted is to look good naked, hope that someone can take it”
- Wonder if he’s ever watched How To Look Good Naked?

“God save me rejection from my reflection. I want perfection”
- WILL ALSO CONSIDER: advection, affection, collection, complexion, confection, connection, convection, correction, a cross-section, defection, detection, direction, dissection, ejection, infection, inflection, injection, inspection, objection, projection, protection, selection.

“Bodies in the Bodhi tree, bodies making chemistry, bodies on my family,
Bodies in the way of me, bodies in the cemetery…”

- Anybody want a cup of tea?

Comedic slating of the song aside, Bodies has done incredibly well, entering the UK singles chart at number 2, selling 89,000 copies in its first week and attaining his best first-week sales since “Rock DJ”

It seems no-one is entirely sure what Robbie is actually singing about but it doesn’t hurt to have a listen to the rather catchy tune…
