Brandon Flowers. Crossfire.

8 Jul

There is nothing as cool as ninjas. Everyone knows that. Brandon Flowers (The Killers frontman, who has gone solo) roped in South African actress/Hollywood superstar Charlize Theron to be in his music video for ‘Crossfire’ which premiered today. Charlize starred as his saviour and those pesky ninjas? No match for her swords and throwing stars!

‘Crossfire’ is the first single to be taken from Flowers solo album ‘Flamingo‘ which was produced by Stuart Price, Daniel Lanois and Brendan O’Brien, and includes songs originally intended for The Killers’ next album.

A comment on YouTube summed the video up nicely “Awesome… Charlize Theron is so gorgeous, and Brandon fucking rules. Great all around.”

Enjoy the video below.

Saturday Night Fever.

8 Jul

The World Cup is almost over and it’s time to fit in one crazy Saturday night party before the final match. I’ve found two events that be sure to tickle your fancy. Have plans? Change them to include either (or both) of these two parties!

DontParty, MyCityByNight and Cape Town Alive got together and took the remnants of the disaster that was the Cool Britannia Festival such as “the insane sound system and stage as well as the bars and other ingredients to make a party.” Their Electronic Music Festival features a line-up including Pascal & Pearce, Ducking Fogshow, Grave Danger, Daine More, El Gordo, Bruce and Mey. The best part? It’ll only set you back R40 presold and R60 at the door.

If you’re more a rock ‘n roll fan you’d be pleased to know Zebra and Giraffe are back in Cape Town after a rather long absence and are set to rock Assembly. They’ll be joined by everyone’s favourite “sing-along-hands-in-the-air-jump-around” DJs, The Wedding DJs and the infamous ensuing battle between Haasbroek and Tommy Gun will continue! It’s R70 presold and R80 at the door.

Sky Ferreira. One.

4 Jul

My favourite “art-glam-trash-pop teen” Sky Ferreira debuted her music video for ‘One’ on Friday. The song was produced by Bloodshy and Avant and the video was shot by renowned fashion photographer Rankin. It sees Sky in a white room with her and her amazing  hair as the focus;  Rankin’s fashion influence is evident throughout the video. All in all it’s great in its simplicity.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again she looks set to make a mark in 2010. Watch out for more from her!

iYiYi.

2 Jul

Thanks to Atlantic Record’s newsletter it came to my attention that Flo Rida just managed to ruin any shred of credibility he had by collaborating with 10 year old Cody Simpson. The guy even looks like a blonde version of Justine Justin Bieber. Oh and he’s 13. Yes. 13. The mind boggles…

Cody’s song ‘iYiYi’ which features Flo Rida requires one to listen to the song to figure out what the title actually means. In the video Cody and his love interest (who looks about 10 years older than him) make friendship bracelets on the beach. I kid you not. I had to stop watching after awhile.

Let it not be said Cody won’t make it to the big time, Justin Bieber is proof of just how that is possible and Cody has one of the most recently popular rappers featuring on his track. His music is kind of sweet if you’re into prepubescent boys who sound like girls…

Richard Jay.

30 Jun

Kids these days. They all seem to be ridiculously talented. Take Richard Jay for example, this 17 year old rising British pop star writes all his own music, plays, sings, records and produces it all himself. His is making great waves in the music industry with his “blend of pop, electro and heartfelt balladry”.

He is featured in the new Converse shoes global initiative campaign in which they promote new young upcoming talented artists . Calvin Harris has taken a liking to him and he is due to record with Allie Gonino and Sky Ferreira later this year in Los Angeles.

Jay is set to go places! Keep an eye out for him.

Fokofpolisiekar, Wake To Wonder, The Runs and Baarmoedergevoel at Assembly.

30 Jun

So Fokofpolisiekar recently hosted a little awesome competition where three lucky bands would be chosen to open for them at Assembly, Cape Town on the 3rd of July. The chosen bands are: Wake To Wonder, The Runs and Baarmoedergevoel.

So we all know Fokof. As for the others? Not so much.

First up is Wake To Wonder. They do a lovely cover of Kings Of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody. They remind me a bit of Seether, if Seether listened to a lot of Kings Of Leon. They mix “melodic and screamo vocals with powerhouse drums, in-your-face guitar melodies and dynamic bass riffs.” Sound good? Well they are.

Meet The Runs. You have to be a pretty good band to have a name like that. I Googled them and found anything but their music but when Google fails there’s always Facebook. Which worked. They draw “influences from blues, funk, hip hop and various other genre’s.” The end result being an “energetic groove based rock sound with a punk attitude.” Lovely!

Last but not least meet Baarmoedergevoel. Their music is a “blend of melodic guitars, funky bass lines and creative drumming and the band has been described as a blend between Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters.” Since I couldn’t find them on Myspace, Facebook or Youtube and their songs wouldn’t stream on their site I’ll have to take their word for it.

If Fokof as well as three up and coming new bands aren’t enough, the music video for Fokofpolisiekar’s latest single, “Tussen Die Krake” will be screened. You can get your tickets here.

See you there!

Jarle Bernhoft.

29 Jun

I’ve always wanted my own one man band. You know, the type you can give put in front of a keyboard, give a guitar and hey presto you have a band. The one man kind. The closest I’ve ever gotten is Yoav but it appears I’ve found another, say hello to Jarle Bernhoft.

This Norwegian was the former lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band SPAN, who broke up in 2005. He has since embarked on a solo career and gone in a very different direction. I like his new acoustic based, funkier, soulful sound. A lot. You will too. Promise.

Huge thanks to Hayley for the heads up!
