Wicker.

11 May

If you took 3OH!3 mixed them with Gym Class Heroes, LMFAO and added a sprinkle of Metro Station’s flavour you’d have Wicker.

The band, made up of Max Nash, Troy Spino, Tyler Stone and Step Alvarez take conventional dance floor bangers to the next level. If you’re looking for well crafted synth fuelled, hip-hop inspired indie pop style you’ll find it here.

These boys are making a name for themselves on the L.A. scene. It’s inevitable we’ll be hearing more about them soon. Keep an eye out!

Rocking out to ‘Dans Dans Dans’.

10 May

If this video isn’t viral by tomorrow it will be a travesty. A travesty I tell you. Who cares knows if it’s staged? It’s one the most hilarious videos I’ve seen in awhile!

Thanks to Elisma Roets for the link!

Miley Cyrus. Can’t Be Tamed.

7 May

The new Miley Cyrus video has been released, normally I wouldn’t comment on such occurrences as they are of little relevance but ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ is a little different, it’s Lady Gaga meets Adam Lambert. Don’t get me wrong here, I love both Gaga and Lambert but Miley’s take on it is rather embarrassing; sure she was going to shed her Disney image at some point but with this? I’m not convinced.

The video includes her donning bird wings and withering around in a cage,  as well as taking a museum back with the help of the winged friends. As someone rightly pointed out that she doesn’t come across as cute or sexy, it’s just cringe worthy.

What do you think of it all?

MK Music Video Project.

7 May

Calling all bands! In a first for South Africa, MK, DStv’s leading rock and pop music channel, is commissioning 10 high quality music videos of South African artists valued at R50,000 each.

Dubbed the MK Music Video Project (MK MVP), MK is inviting production companies to approach any band they believe complements MK’s progressive channel strategy and to pitch on their behalf. Similarly bands and record companies who would like to put their songs and ideas forward, should approach a South Africa production company to do so.

Says Victor Edward Eckard, Head of Content for MK: “The South African music and production industry offers a wealth of exceptional talent. Through MK MVP we hope to further stimulate this market and bring that talent to the fore, allowing our artists and production houses to show their true colours and in so doing offer our viewers compelling content.”

MK MVP pitches are only open to South African production companies. The music videos need to meet the R50,000 budget and need to be of a high production value. In essence the videos need to raise the standard of music videos in South Africa.

Bands who would like to pitch their tracks must do so through a recognized music video production company who, in turn, must follow the correct format. All pitches must be sent via email to victor.edward@mnet.co.za and the deadline for all pitches is 31 May 2010.

Check MK’s site for more info!

Locnville sign a deal with Sony Music International.

5 May

Locnville, the South African identical twin duo behind the hit song “Sun In My pocket’ penned a worldwide deal with Sony Music International yesterday.

Andrew and Brian Chaplin said it was a dream come true for them and they were honoured to be on the same label as some of their favourite artists.

The first international single to go to radio is the title track, Sun in My Pocket. Locnville’s debut single and album, both entitled ‘Sun In My Pocket’, will be released around the world on Sony’s Jive Records imprint over the coming months, except in the UK, where it will be released on Sony’s Epic Records, except in the United Kingdom where it will be released on Sony’s Epic Records imprint.

Jive Records is home to some of the world’s biggest recording artists, including Usher, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and R Kelly.

Kevin Lawrie, president of Sony Music International, Europe and Africa, had the following to say: “The Locnville guys wrote and recorded the album on their own and approached it from an independent standpoint. Sony’s role is to now broadcast this great story to the rest of the world.”

In an interview I did with the duo at the beginning of the year, they expressed that their only “only specific goal [in the music industry] is to see how far we can take Locnville. I want to expand our boundaries by collaborating with people you wouldn’t expect us to; I want to do it all.” They also said they “do plan to go international but they wanted to have “a foundation” in their home country before taking it overseas.”

Locnville are set to conquer the global scene, watch out for them!

Midnight Conspiracy.

4 May

Aah. Myspace. The original home of social networking, now reduced to a defunct site to some but one that bands need to ‘exist’.

Don’t go knocking Myspace, it’s full of hidden gems. How do I know? Well, I still have and use my account. Why, you ask? I do because it’s upon occasions such as those when I am friend requested by bands like Midnight Conspiracy, I appreciate Myspace more than most.

Once I saw they remixed a mind altering version of Chromeo’s “Night by Night” (which climbed all the way to the #2 spot on Hype Machine) I knew I was on to a winner.

So allow me to introduce to you co-conspirators Mikul Wing, Louis Kha, and Graham Cody, otherwise know as Midnight Conspiracy. Their Chromeo remix is just a small sample of what Chicago already knew – Midnight Conspiracy can rock the fuck out of any dance floor. Now you know too.

Here’s the best part, you can download their remixes for free here.  Awesome, I know.

With official remixes of Esser, MSTRKRFT, Editors, Cool Kids and Hey Champ soon to follow, as well as  song to be featured on Crystal Castles’ upcoming remix album and much more in store, it appears Midnight Conspiracy aren’t going to remain a Chicago secret for much longer…
