The Temper Trap. Fader.

14 Feb

The Temper Trap was one of my exciting finds in 2009. Their music has been described as having an “atmospheric sound, featuring grand guitars set to pulsating rhythm”

After listening to Science of Fear by The Temper Trap, I thought that would undoubtedly be my favourite song of theirs, how wrong I was. After hearing Fader I must admit Science of Fear has been thoroughly beaten.

I can’t wait to hear more from the band!

Win a night on the town with one of your favourite celebs and stop African poverty in its tracks.

12 Feb

CAPE TOWNBreadline Africa, a local charity that believes in giving a hand-up not a hand-out, wants to take you out to dinner with one of your favourite local celebs. All you need to do is to make a small, or big, donation towards alleviating poverty in Africa and you could win an evening out with Just Jinjer, Heinz Winckler, Sasha Martinengo or 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Bailey Schneider.

The competition runs from 1 –  28 February 2010, and to enter simply donate to Breadline Africa via SMS (36010) or its website, www.breadlineafrica.org/celebs. The more you donate, the better your chances to win the prize. And don’t forget to choose which celeb you would like to meet if you win: you do this by including the correct code  (JINGER, HEINZ,SASHA or BAILEY) if you enter by SMS, or checking the appropriate tick box if you enter online.

Four lucky winners will be whisked off for a fun-filled evening with a top SA celeb, or group of celebs, who are also doing their bit to eradicate poverty in Africa – for once and for all. Flights are included, and you’ll get an exclusive culinary experience with your favourite local celebs!

Breadline Africa is involved in a range of projects across Southern Africa, all aimed at helping communities become sustainable and enabling them to help themselves. Most of the projects involve placing refurbished shipping containers in disadvantaged areas to be used as classrooms, soup kitchens, clinics, libraries or ablution blocks.

“We are thrilled at the support we have received from these South African role models. The competition winners are guaranteed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – as well as changing lives through their donations to Breadline Africa,” said Marianna Boguslavsky, Online Marketing Manager, Breadline Africa.

MXit, the global mobile social networking and instant messenger, has joined forces with Breadline Africa to help generate support in the fight against poverty in Africa, by promoting the competition to its three-quarters of a million music lovers. The MXit Music community will be encouraged to open their hearts and SMS the short-code, adding their support to stop African poverty in its tracks – while having the opportunity to engage for an evening, with some of South Africa’s best music talent.

John Mayer apologises for his controversial interview with Playboy.

11 Feb

Last night, John Mayer was in Nashville, where, whilst onstage he apologised for his interview with Playboy which has caused more than a little controversy. In the interview he was candid about topics from his high profile relationships, his reputation as a douche bag and much more.

He says in the above video (in which he seemed extremely sincere) that in his “quest to be clever..speedy and witty [he tried to] buy himself another day [so] people couldn’t pin him down as a creep.” He then told his fans that he intends to “quit the media game” and that he just wants to “play [his] guitar.”

He then took to his Twitter page saying “While I’m using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it’s time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews… I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it…”

I love John Mayer but his interview was more than “raw”, it was insensitive at times. Lets see if he can stick to doing what he does best which is playing his guitar…

Fred Durst likes Die Antwoord.

10 Feb

I recently wrote about the Die Antwoord and the viral sensation they have caused across the globe. Now even Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit fame is catching on and has taken to Twitter  saying to them “I fucking LOVE your music, vibe, and chemistry. Take them by the fucking neck and choke’m down! Die Antwoord!”

Die Antwoord really are becoming something of a phenomenon.

Thanks to Vincent for the heads ups!

Will Mono and Jan Joknie. Seks Vir Plesier.

9 Feb

I am in love with Will Mono and Jan Joknie.

What? You don’t know who they are? They are the duo behind Seks Vir Plesier. It’s Afrikaans electro/pop at its best. Draw conclusions where you will regarding the content, as for the song as a whole, it’s catchy, electro genius-although I must say Jan Joknie has a sound rather akin to Gazelle’s. hmmm…

The video has been referred to as “uber-weird”, I prefer special and on point…

What do you think?

Die Antwoord.

8 Feb

If you haven’t heard of Die Antwoord you’ve clearly haven’t been on a computer or near the internet for the past few weeks. Now for all of you who have been unaware of this phenomenon, Die Antwoord is a “zef rap-rave” crew from Cape Town South Africa and is made up of Ninja (former Max Normal frontman Waddy Jones), Yo-landi Visser and DJ Hi-Tek.

According to their official website Die Antwoord is a “lovable, mongrel-like entity made in South Africa, the love-child of many diverse cultures, black, white, coloured and alien, all pumped into one wild and crazy journey down the crooked path to enlightenment.”

So why exactly are they so popular? Well, it’s the fans of course. When Die Antwoord was featured on blog Boing Boing in early February it was the start of a viral sensation across the globe-something no South African act has managed to a degree such as theirs.

They have over 500,000 views on YouTube for their video ‘Enter the Ninja’, not bad at for an international act, brilliant for a South African act and amazing for most, considering it’s doubled in just 3 days…

They have been dubbed “awesome in the manner that it’s everything that was wrong with the 80s. Think Vanilla Ice with a 5 year old fascination of ninjas… bad beats, disturbing female backup…so wrong and yet I can’t stop….”

Below is their video for ‘Enter the Ninja’. It makes for interesting viewing. For the lyrics click here. Enjoy!
