So-So Fresh.

2 Feb

Saturday’s ‘So-So Fresh’ at The Assembly promises to be an all out amazing show with a drool inducing lineup that consists of Ashtray Electric, New Holland, Thieve, Haasbroek and The Modes.

If you don’t know the 3 main bands, Ashtray Electric, New Holland and Thieve all hail from Bellville, a suburb that has spawned many of the greatest bands that have been seen of late.

Ashtray brings the “dreamy, moody music that is packed with riffs that resonate”. New Holland brings their brand of “irresistible and contagious brand of pop-laced rock” and Thieve will bring their rather unique motto that “everybody steals.” Now does that sound like a good show or what?

Tickets are just R40 (pre-sale) and R60 (at the door) how reasonable is that for 3 of the most exciting bands plus some?

AC/DC and Iron Man 2.

1 Feb

Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau is such a fan of AC/DC that they are responsible for the entire soundtrack for the film. Yes. The entire soundtrack.

This all came about through a unique collaboration between Marvel Studios and Columbia Records. AC/DC:  Iron Man 2, features 15 classic AC/DC songs selected from ten of the band’s studio albums, ranging from 1976 to 2008. The soundtrack has been said to be something akin to a collection of the bands greatest hits. The soundtrack will be released on April 19, 2010.

The debut video from AC/DC:  Iron Man 2 is the AC/DC’s classic album cut “Shoot To Thrill,” which was filmed live last month in Buenos Aires during the band’s highly acclaimed Black Ice World Tour.

“Jon Favreau’s vision and passion for AC/DC’s music blend seamlessly into this incredible film” said Steve Barnett, co-chairman of Columbia Records.  “The music really underscores the high energy and excitement of the film.”

“Music is an integral part of the Tony Stark and Iron Man experience, and we are pleased that Columbia and AC/DC are taking part in the franchise’s phenomenon. Through this relationship, the band is delivering fans supercharged Iron Man branded music through all our combined consumer touch points, from the movie to retail outlets and even virally with the debut of the new video,” said Tim Connors, Chief Operating Officer, Marvel Studios.

If the soundtrack isn’t exciting enough, the cast should be with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his starring role as the larger-than-life leading character, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Samuel L. Jackson. The film opens internationally beginning on April 28, 2010 and the U.S.release date is May 7, 2010.

AC/DC:  Iron Man 2 Track Listing:

  1. Shoot to Thrill
  2. Rock ‘N’ Roll Damnation
  3. Guns for Hire
  4. Cold Hearted Man
  5. Back in Black

The Watermark High.

1 Feb

The Watermark High is a band from Gauteng, South Africa. The Watermark High started out as the acoustic solo project of Paul van der Walt, back in 2003. The band since went through various incarnations and line-ups and have independently released two EPs to date, “(What) Are You Thinking?” (2003) and “Disappear With Me” (2008).

Currently their line-up comprises of Paul van der Walt (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, lyrics, bass and vocals), Robin McDonald (acoustic drums, keyboard and live electronics) and Adrian Erasmus (bass, electric guitar, keyboard and backing vocals).

The band’s sound reflects their wide variety of influences ranging from post-rock to electronica to ambient and everything in-between.

Their aim is to “create music that is evocative and experimental, dabbling in and merging the down-tempo and beautiful side of both rock and electronic music. ” Paul explains “It’s very much an experimental band. We play pretty, dreamy music that’s instrumental and semi-instrumental – A mix between rock and an electronic element…” The band also embraces the use of various instruments, with each member often switching roles from song to song.

The band recently released their debut album, “Loneliness As An Art Form”, as a free download from their website. You can get it here.
