Rebecca Black. Friday. NEUS STFU Remix.

4 Apr

We all know about Rebecca Black. If you somehow missed the train wreck, consider yourself lucky. It is something over 30 million people wished they hadn’t seen.

However, Das Kapital recently pointed me  in the direction of this remix of  ‘Friday’ and guess what? It’s not too bad to listen to. It is actually pretty good. Besides the fact Rebecca’s vocals are used of course.Oh well, you win some you lose some.

Weekend lineup.

1 Apr

This weekend is going to be a cracker of note. Don’t beleive me? Well, how about 12th Avenue’s album launch at Mercury? Entrance  will set you back R20. The lineup includes: The Undefind  and DJ B-Wise (Drum & Bass). Or how about Discotheque, featuring Designer Drugs’ Michael Vincent Patrick? He is here for a two-leg South African stop-over. He will be joined by some of Cape Town’s finest – including the bteam, Kennedy, Lapse, Tommy Gun, Kidcolt and VJs Contraband. Sound good? I know.

Saturday looks to be equally exciting with avant-garde electronic rockers, Kidofdoom playing at Assembly after a year-long absence. They will be joined by Popskarr, Bateleur, Us Kids Know, Haasbroek vs Tommy Gun and DJ Moe Joe. Doors open at 8PM. It’ll set you back R40 until 9:30 and R60 thereafter.
See you around lovelies!

Born This Way. Lady Gaga. Country style.

31 Mar

I knew it. Secretly The Gaga didn’t want ‘Born This Way’ to be an overproduced, awful sounding song. She wanted something slow and meaningful. She wanted a country song. Ok, maybe she didn’t want a country song but she has officially released this remake of her hit song.

I like this version better, her vocals shine through and surprisingly, the country music isn’t that terrible to listen to. But don’t tell anyone I said that.

Fenech-Soler. Demons. Alan Wilkis remix.

29 Mar

Yelle has called his Temper Trap remix one of her favourites. This Brooklyn based musician is multi-instrumentalist and an all round remarkable producer. He has recorded and released two critically-acclaimed solo albums to date (”Pink and Purple” and “Babies Dream Big”). Oh and he has created official remixes for Yeasayer, RJD2, Phoenix, The Temper Trap, Phantogram, The Very Best, Shwayze, and many more. Meet my new favourite, Alan Wilkis.

Now, I just love Fenech-Soler and when I got Wilkis’s remix of ‘Demons’ I was in heaven. It is twinkly and has just a streak of grimey pop. He was channelling his “inner-Timbaland” on this one and it shows. Don’t you just love it?

You can buy it here. You know what to do.

Rolling In The Deep. John Legend style.

27 Mar

So, Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ has been making its rounds on radio and while it’s one hard song to become tired of hearing I feared it might happen soon. All things changed when thanks to Suede I was pointed in the direction of John Legend’s cover of the aforementioned song and all was right with the world. No really, it’s true.

I’m not going to tell you just how much I love John Legend or Adele for that matter. Why? Because John Legend’s recent cover of ‘Rolling in Deep’ will be more than adequate to show you why. It’s minimalistic, soulful, acapella cover and does the song full justice. John Legend style of course.

Oh and you can download it here. Enjoy!

The Best of Nate Dogg. M-Rock style.

23 Mar

M-Rock has done it again. This time it’s The Best of Nate Dogg. He calls it “a tribute to the best of probably the greatest hook vocalist in hip-hop.  Nate Dogg had made his mark as a legend and main ingredient in the game the first time we heard him on “Ain’t No Fun” off of the classic album, Doggystyle.  He’s “that dude who can make you cry even though he’s singing about putting his balls in somebody’s mouth!”.  Listening to his music all over again reminds me of how flawless his voice was, his songwriting and how essential he was in making a song a banger whether it’s for the club or something smooth like “Regulate” or “Never Leave Me Alone”.  Ice Cube said “it must be a single if Nate Dogg’s on it”, and rumour has it that “Oh No” (his single w/Mos Def, Pharaoh Monche) has a record for the highest vinyl rap singles sold. “

M-Rock goes on to say “being a DJ who plays a bit of T-Pain and autotune-made music, it gives me a special appreciation to hear how much of a natural pitch-perfect singer Nate was – even his youtube freestyles give the impression that he did not rely on sound engineering the way today’s singers do..  Enjoy.  RIP Nathaniel Dwayne Hale.”

Jack Parow J-Day.

19 Mar

Tonight is the night. Get ready for a takeover of Assembly. Jack Parow style. Think good times, good drinks and great performances courtesy of Bittereinder, Sedge Warbler, Blush and Bass and DJ Slideshow. It’s also the launch of Parow’s next-level sexy new video for Byellville; it tells a zero-to-hero story. It’s been said you will be in for a surprise or two, so keep your eyes peeled.

Oh and while you’re at it you can get your hands on some Parowphernalia too. You know you want it.

The show will set you back R60 and doors open at 8. All in all it promises to be an unmissable show.

See you there!
