Saturday Night Fever.

8 Jul

The World Cup is almost over and it’s time to fit in one crazy Saturday night party before the final match. I’ve found two events that be sure to tickle your fancy. Have plans? Change them to include either (or both) of these two parties!

DontParty, MyCityByNight and Cape Town Alive got together and took the remnants of the disaster that was the Cool Britannia Festival such as “the insane sound system and stage as well as the bars and other ingredients to make a party.” Their Electronic Music Festival features a line-up including Pascal & Pearce, Ducking Fogshow, Grave Danger, Daine More, El Gordo, Bruce and Mey. The best part? It’ll only set you back R40 presold and R60 at the door.

If you’re more a rock ‘n roll fan you’d be pleased to know Zebra and Giraffe are back in Cape Town after a rather long absence and are set to rock Assembly. They’ll be joined by everyone’s favourite “sing-along-hands-in-the-air-jump-around” DJs, The Wedding DJs and the infamous ensuing battle between Haasbroek and Tommy Gun will continue! It’s R70 presold and R80 at the door.

Fokofpolisiekar, Wake To Wonder, The Runs and Baarmoedergevoel at Assembly.

30 Jun

So Fokofpolisiekar recently hosted a little awesome competition where three lucky bands would be chosen to open for them at Assembly, Cape Town on the 3rd of July. The chosen bands are: Wake To Wonder, The Runs and Baarmoedergevoel.

So we all know Fokof. As for the others? Not so much.

First up is Wake To Wonder. They do a lovely cover of Kings Of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody. They remind me a bit of Seether, if Seether listened to a lot of Kings Of Leon. They mix “melodic and screamo vocals with powerhouse drums, in-your-face guitar melodies and dynamic bass riffs.” Sound good? Well they are.

Meet The Runs. You have to be a pretty good band to have a name like that. I Googled them and found anything but their music but when Google fails there’s always Facebook. Which worked. They draw “influences from blues, funk, hip hop and various other genre’s.” The end result being an “energetic groove based rock sound with a punk attitude.” Lovely!

Last but not least meet Baarmoedergevoel. Their music is a “blend of melodic guitars, funky bass lines and creative drumming and the band has been described as a blend between Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters.” Since I couldn’t find them on Myspace, Facebook or Youtube and their songs wouldn’t stream on their site I’ll have to take their word for it.

If Fokof as well as three up and coming new bands aren’t enough, the music video for Fokofpolisiekar’s latest single, “Tussen Die Krake” will be screened. You can get your tickets here.

See you there!

Discotheque. Dont Party ‘Hooligans’.

23 Jun

Take Haezer, Bruce Willis??, El Gordo, Popskarr and mix in a little bit of Kennedy, Liver and The Brick City Massive and you’ll have the line-up for Discotheque this Friday at Assembly, brought to you by Don’t Party.

Now wipe the drool off your chin. Actually don’t. It looks so unbelievably good you’d be forgiven for drooling all over yourself and the keyboard. And all of this for only R50? It’s practically a steal.

So who will I be seeing there?

Not To Be Missed Gigs

3 Nov

Assembly

Assembly have a reputation for premier live entertainment and it seems November is such a month to showcase that.

With shows featuring the likes of aKING,  chart toppers and media darlings, as well as Jack Parow, the biggest thing to happen to Afrikaans and Thieve-charisma made audible, playing a highly anticipated show on the 5th of November.

Then if that wasn’t enough, Goldfish (made up of Dominic Peters and David Poole), one of the hottest jazz/electro duos this side of the equator hailing from Cape Town South Africa will be heating up the dancefloor at Discotheque on the 6th. It’s sure to be a party-with a capital P.

With a sound that has been compared to Prime Circle and Watershed but is still uniquely their own, MerseyState is the culmination of alternative rock at its best. They’re set to rock at Assembly on November 7th.

These are not-to-be-missed shows.  Get your tickets here.
