The New Yorker tells a stirring story of legendary spoken word performer, Gil-Scott Heron. The 62 year-old’s death was confirmed to reporters by his book publisher and XL Recordings. Reports suggest that he died on Friday afternoon at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York after becoming sick upon returning from a recent European trip.
Heron is best known for ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ and recently appeared back in the spotlight with his new album ‘I’m New Here’ which Jamie Smith (of the xx) reworked for ‘We’re New Here’. His music influenced many and has been sampled on tracks by Common, The Game, Tupac Shakur and by Kanye West.
Richard Russell of XL Recordings said of him, “Gil meant a massive amount to me, as he did to so many people. His talent was immense. He was a a master lyricist, singer, orator, and keyboard player. His spirit was immense. He channeled something that people derived huge benefit from.”
The music world has suffered a huge loss. Rest in Peace.
