Today-on the last day of the decade- I bring to you Ellie Goulding. She is utterly enchanting. Her breathless, dreamy, folk and soulful sound is similar to that of Kate Nash and Florence & The Machine.
If she isn’t a household name in 2010, it will be a travesty, but by looks of things she will be, with a Brit award under her belt and having toured the UK alongside Little Boots. She is currently at work on her debut album and has worked with some renowned producers, including Mark Ronson, Starsmith and Frankmusik.
In an interview with The Guardian it comes to light that “there was no stage schooling, no TV talent contests or famous family members for Goulding… She grew up in rural Hereford with her mother, who worked in a supermarket, her stepfather, a lorry driver, a brother and two sisters. And though she took up clarinet and guitar, joined the local operatic society and performed in school plays, her musical inclinations were hardly encouraged. “I could only sing when my mum wasn’t there,” she says. “I think she had a weird way of supporting and encouraging me, more like an old-fashioned way of ‘work hard’ rather than ‘that’s brilliant’.”
All of her music is charming, but her wonderful cover of Sam Sparro’s Black and Gold and her song Starry Eyed are delicate mixtures of electronica and folk that catch your attention and make you really listen.
